About
Kindred souls from opposite poles maybe. However, it was their undying love for real music that brought Philadelphia-bred songstress, Monique Harcum, and Belgian turntablist, DJ Grazzhoppa together in more ways than one. First as friends, then as husband, wife, and parents. The duo known as Mo & Grazz, are flexing a unique blend of music that fuses hip-hop, funk, jazz, gospel and classic r&b, to create a sound that goes beyond any single musical genre.
Mo started out her artistic career in the States as a dancer. She was featured in Spike Lee’s film, Malcolm X before touring with the European adaptation of two Broadway musicals, Little Shop of Horrors and Hair. It was approximately at that time Mo started singing professionally. She’s toured with Zap Mama, Les Nubians, and Grammy Award-winning R&B artist Jill Scott and can be heard on the live album Experience Jill Scott+360.
Grazz is an accomplished producer as well as a deejay, he has worked on mediums from the theatre to the studio. He is the 1991 European DMC Champion and the bronze medalist in the 1998 ITF World DJ Championships. Grazz has collaborated with talents like De Puta Madre, Cage, MF DOOM, Blade, Greedy-Fingers and AKA Moon to name a few. Considered by some to be the godfather of Belgian hip-hop, Grazz has released over 100 records on vinyl and CD.
In 2006, Mo &Grazz released their debut album "Falling Upon Def Ears". A fusion of gospel, hard-hitting hip-hop grooves, and infectious vocal melodies. A ferocious live act, they routinely switch between an eight-piece band and “old school” dual-turntables-and-microphone. They have been the opening act for artists like Angie Stone, Roots Manuva, and Guru of Jazzmatazz. In 2007, they had the honour of opening for ‘70s soul legends, Sly & The Family Stone at the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Gent, Belgium.
In 2009, Mo&Grazz released their sophomore project "Gemini", on Featherperm Records in the States. Capturing an even larger audience, Gemini cemented Mo&Grazz as the “Ones to watch” in the R&B/ Soul Belgian scene. Hence opening them up to the world. With invitations to Spain, China, and the UK.
Due in the spring of 2018, the release of their 3rd Album, “Defiant” much to the excitement of their long awaiting fans.
Faced with an ever-changing music industry, Mo&Grazz steered away from production norms to accomplish the completion of their third album. Limited resources were no issue with the immeasurable support they received from some of the most talented musicians, singers, graphic/ visual artists, and engineers to make it happen. This large community of artists, determined to keep Independent music alive, all agreed to work on this project for the sheer desire to see fellow artists create organically grown music. No filters, no fillers, this music is raw and uncut.
